📖Publication Review : Ghetto World is a collection of poems expressing Xolani’s thoughts and emotions about growing up in Soweto, "the ghetto", his ghetto world.
In one of his poems, he expresses that:"Soweto is a peat of death, Neighbours are demons,Casting spells, Wishing you hellChildren choke from the smoke of their mothers' sins Children burn with the future on their handsThere is no telling what the future holds for the nation When you dancing with the devil."
This poetry collection is a true reflection of his subjective experiences. Some of the poems such as, "life in the hood; advice for the ghetto girl; ghetto war; shack; black boy poem”, reflect the peat of death to which ghetto world is to him. It is a world where one gets to experience the tides, succumbing to the excruciating, tormenting, and devastating pains and pleasures of the ghetto dream. A place where external factors have rippling effects to one's livelihood.
Indeed, “there is no telling what the future holds for the nation.”
The poems in this book glue us to the reality of being, holding us together to remind us that change is inevitable, we can live past the sordid realities of the ghetto life if we allow ourselves to by sharpening the mind and freeing ourselves from mental slavery.
